School Caretaker – Full-Time, Permanent
Location: Bristol
Hours: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM (Monday to Friday)
Salary: £29,000 to £32,000

TeacherActive is seeking a full-time, permanent School Caretaker to join a well-regarded primary school in Bristol and play a key role in ensuring the school runs smoothly and remains a safe, clean, and welcoming space for students and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Opening and closing the school each day as a designated keyholder, ensuring all buildings are secure

• Performing general maintenance and minor repairs across the site (e.g. doors, windows, lighting, plumbing)

• Carrying out routine health & safety checks and risk assessments to ensure compliance and safety

• Supervising and liaising with external contractors carrying out site work

• Keeping school grounds tidy and safe, including basic groundskeeping and clearing outdoor areas

• Responding to emergencies, such as alarm activations, maintenance issues, or weather-related site concerns

• Monitoring site security, including managing access points, securing buildings, and checking CCTV (if applicable)

• Supporting school events, including setting up furniture, signage, and equipment when needed

• Overseeing waste disposal, recycling, and inventory of maintenance supplies

• Assisting cleaning staff or stepping in to ensure communal areas meet hygiene standards

What We’re Looking For:

• Previous experience in a caretaker, site manager, or maintenance role (preferred)

• A proactive, hands-on approach with a good understanding of building/site maintenance

• Basic DIY, plumbing, and repair skills

• Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to work independently

• Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, health & safety regulations and safeguarding procedures

• Flexibility and reliability, with a positive, professional attitude

• A valid DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)

• Willingness to take on keyholding responsibilities, including early starts and occasional out-of-hours call-outs
