Celebrating Black History Month at TeacherActive

Every October we celebrate Black History Month as a team, facilitated by our diversity and inclusion initiative Empower.

Black History Month has become a staple event in TeacherActive’s calendar, it’s a time for our team to acknowledge how much black history has shaped our society, a time for reflection on the challenges and hardships black people have faced and, of course, a time for celebration of culture and community.

During October, we were delighted to host Nathan Dennis of First Class Foundation and Legacy Consultants. First Class Foundation is a registered charity that aims to reduce youth violence and improve the mental resilience of young people, while Nathan’s co-owned company Legacy Consultants delivers diversity and inclusion training in a corporate setting.

Nathan delivered an engaging training session called ‘This is How Black Men Lose Their Smile’ which uncovered microaggressions black men can face in both work and personal lives and the effect this can have on mental health.

Secondly, we hosted our famous Empower Cookout, a day everyone looks forward to as it’s a time to get together over delicious food! Our team brought food from African and Caribbean cultures including Curry Goat, Jollof Rice and Jamaican Patties for all to share, or ordered from their local independent businesses. The Empower Cookout is a great chance for everyone to connect and learn new recipes, and is used as a fundraising tool for the charity Show Racism the Red Card which we champion annually.

Show Racism the Red Card tackles racism in society by delivering educational topics in schools, workplaces and football stadiums. This year, we fundraised £411 for the charity, the most we’ve raised for Show Racism the Red Card in a single event!

We are proud to champion events such as Black History Month for our team members, made possible by Empower. This diversity and inclusion initiative believes in bringing your whole self to work and aims to uplift voices, create a culture of tolerance and drive change within recruitment and beyond.
