Helpful tools and platforms to guide your induction year in Wales

Starting your NQT year is exciting, but there’s a lot to stay on top of. From registering with the Education Workforce Council (EWC) to finding lesson resources and logging your induction progress, this page brings together all the essential tools and platforms in one place.

Register with the EWC

Before you begin your induction, you must be registered with the Education Workforce Council (EWC). This is a legal requirement for all teachers in Wales. Registration confirms your eligibility to teach and gives you access to the Professional Learning Passport (PLP).

Register with the EWC

Don't forget, you need to renew your membership every April to continue teaching!

Log in to your EWC account

Once you’re registered, you’ll use your EWC account to update personal details, access your PLP, and manage your professional record. You’ll need your EWC number and password to log in.

Explore the Professional Learning Passport (PLP)

The PLP is where you log your 380 teaching sessions and record your induction evidence. You’ll also use it to reflect on your professional learning and link activities to the Welsh professional standards.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Understanding your NQT induction

What happens after I finish my induction?

Once your induction is complete, you are fully qualified to teach in maintained schools in Wales. We can support you in finding permanent or leadership roles as your career develops.

Can I complete my induction in more than one school?

Yes, many NQTs complete induction across multiple schools, especially when working on supply. Just ensure your sessions are logged and verified properly.

What happens if I don’t complete my induction within the time limit?

You must complete your induction within five years of gaining QTS. If not, you may need to reapply or face restrictions on teaching in maintained schools in Wales.

Can daily supply work count towards my induction?

Yes, daily supply work can count towards your induction in Wales, but you must log your sessions and ensure they are verified with a signed Record of Attendance from the school.

How many sessions do I need to complete my induction?

You need to complete 380 teaching sessions. One session equals a half-day of classroom teaching.

Can I complete my NQT induction while working on supply?

Yes, in Wales you can complete your induction through short-term or long-term supply work, as long as the sessions are appropriately recorded and verified. You must ensure you are registered with the EWC and that you submit the Short-Term Supply Notification Form before logging sessions.

What counts towards my NQT induction in Wales?

Any teaching session where you are delivering lessons to pupils, whether in a long-term post or on daily supply, can count towards your induction. Each half-day of teaching is logged as one session, and you must complete a total of 380 sessions to finish your induction year.

Registering with the EWC and logging your progress

Who can sign off my induction sessions?

A senior staff member or mentor at the school where the session took place must sign off the Record of Attendance. This is then submitted through your PLP.

Do I need to find my own mentor?

In most cases, schools will assign a mentor. If you are on supply, the local authority will appoint an external verifier. At TeacherActive, we also offer additional coaching support through our career coaches.

What is the Professional Learning Passport (PLP) and how do I use it?

The PLP is your digital portfolio for tracking your induction. You log your teaching sessions, upload CPD evidence, and complete your induction profile here. It is accessed through your MyEWC account once you’re registered.

How do I register with the Education Workforce Council (EWC)?

You can register online via the EWC website. You’ll need your Teacher Reference Number (TRN), an up-to-date DBS check, and to select the correct registration category (School Teacher). There is an annual fee of £45.
