Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Do I need to create my own risk assessment for a tuition placement?

No, as an agency worker you are not responsible for creating your own risk assessment.

Your placement setting (such as a school, alternative provision or local authority venue) is legally responsible for ensuring the environment is safe and appropriate. They must carry out a formal risk assessment that identifies potential hazards, determines who might be at risk, and puts appropriate measures in place to minimise those risks.

TeacherActive is responsible for checking that the hirer has completed a suitable risk assessment and for sharing relevant information with you before you begin your placement.

If you are ever asked to produce your own risk assessment, please speak to your TeacherActive consultant. While you may be asked to follow or contribute to an existing plan (for example, to help ensure safety during home visits), we will never expect you to create a risk assessment from scratch.

I have childcare commitments which means I can only work certain hours each day, can I still work as a tutor?

Yes! We work with a number of Schools and Local Authorities who are looking for tutors who can support young people who require tuition during the school day. Working with your tuition consultant you will be able to schedule sessions that work around your availability and personal commitments to offer consistent support the students require.

My student missed a session of tuition, what do I do?

Each client will have their own attendance policy which will be discussed with you with your consultant at the point of booking. If you are unsure or need to clarify what to do, please contact your booking consultant as soon as possible.

If I am working for two different clients as a tutor for TeacherActive, will this impact my tax?

No. As a tutor for TeacherActive, if you are only working with us, you will only have one job and will pay PAYE. Working for different clients will not affect how much tax you pay as Workwell will be your sole employer.

If I am concerned about the welfare of a student, what do I do?

If you are concerned about a student, you need to speak to your consultant immediately who will be able to provide you with the right information to take appropriate action. You may be asked for a written statement to support your concerns to ensure that the client and your consultant can ensure that your concerns are heard by the appropriate agency.

Can I work as a tutor on a full-time basis?

Yes you can. You can work up to 30 hours per week as a tutor as we provide tuition during the school day and after school and weekends. Your dedicated tuition consultant will be able to timetable you as many hours as you are able to safely work and with students that are well suited to your experience and skill set.
