Your NQT pathway - Supporting you through every step of induction in Wales

Your journey as a newly qualified teacher is about more than just finding work. It is about completing your induction with clarity, confidence and support. At TeacherActive, we help NQTs across Wales understand what is expected and provide personalised guidance to help you succeed. Whether you are just starting out or part-way through, we are here to help you move from QTS to full registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC).

What does the induction period include?

Part One: Teaching and professional practice

This section covers your core responsibilities and skills in the classroom, including areas like setting high expectations, promoting pupil progress, demonstrating subject knowledge, planning lessons, adapting teaching, using assessment data, managing behaviour, and fulfilling professional responsibilities.

Part Two: Personal and professional conduct

This part relates to the expected professional behaviours and ethics of an educator.

Feedback if given by the mentor throughout as part of the assessment.

Part of the final assessment includes entries filled in on the NQT induction profile, which is then submitted to the body to check if they have passed or failed.

Finding a mentor

As part of your induction, you must have a school-based mentor who provides regular feedback and guidance. If you are working in one school for an extended period, your mentor will typically be assigned by the school. If you are doing supply work, this can be more complex.

We help you:

  • Understand the role and expectations of an induction mentor.
  • Identify schools that provide the right induction environment.
  • Request or confirm a mentor when placed regularly in a school.
  • Communicate with external mentors in supply settings.

In addition to your school-based mentor, you will also have access to a TeacherActive career coach who offers regular support and guidance throughout your induction year.

Logging your NQT sessions with the EWC

To complete your induction, you must log at least 380 teaching sessions using the EWC’s Professional Learning Passport (PLP). It is your responsibility to keep this record accurate and up to date.

We support you by:

  • Helping you understand which sessions qualify toward induction.
  • Providing reminders and tips for regular logging.
  • Offering step-by-step guidance on how to use the PLP.
  • Liaising with schools to confirm your session records.
  • Supporting sign-off when TeacherActive provides the placement.

If you are unsure how to begin or feel stuck, your consultant will walk you through the process and keep you on track.

Evidencing your CPD

During your induction year, you are expected to complete and reflect on continuing professional development (CPD) activities. These are part of how you demonstrate progress against the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership in Wales.

We help by offering:

  • Free access to CPD courses through our My-Progression platform.

  • Relevant topics including behaviour management, safeguarding, ALN and more.

  • Guidance on how to reflect on your learning and link it to the standards.

  • Support with uploading and organising evidence in your PLP.

  • Advice on selecting CPD that complements your placement experience

Our goal is to make CPD a meaningful part of your pathway, not an extra burden.

Accessing MYP certificates

All CPD you complete through My-Progression comes with a downloadable certificate. These can be used as part of your PLP and presented to mentors or employers as proof of professional learning.

Benefits include:

  • Unlimited access to teacher-focused training

  • Certificates automatically stored for easy access

  • A clear, practical way to build your induction portfolio

  • Alignment with the standards used to assess your NQT year

Your career coach can recommend courses based on your subject area, goals or feedback from schools.
