Education Workforce Council Guide for NQTs

Welcome to your complete Education Workforce Council (EWC) guide. Whether you're starting your first teaching role or progressing through induction, this page supports NQTs in Wales through every stage of the EWC process. Learn how to register, log sessions, and complete your Induction Profile using the Professional Learning Passport (PLP).

Why the EWC matters

The Education Workforce Council is the professional regulator for teachers in Wales. All NQTs must register with the EWC to begin their statutory induction. Without registration, your teaching sessions cannot count towards your induction period. EWC registration not only confirms your professional status but also gives you access to essential tools like the Professional Learning Passport.

Step 1: Registering with the EWC

Before starting any teaching work, make sure you are fully registered with the EWC in the "School Teacher" category. This includes completing an online registration form, paying the £45 fee, and ensuring your DBS check is up to date.

You will need your Teacher Reference Number (TRN) to complete the process. Once your registration is confirmed, you will receive access to the MyEWC portal where you can manage your professional profile. Remember: any teaching done before registration does not count towards your induction.

Step 2: Accessing the Professional Learning Passport (PLP)

After registering, you can log into your MyEWC account to access your Professional Learning Passport. The PLP is your online portfolio to track learning and reflect on progress throughout your induction.

This is where you will upload CPD evidence, complete your online Induction Profile, and log sessions. When accessing it for the first time, select your preferred language (English or Welsh) so the platform is tailored to your needs.

Step 3: Starting your induction profile

Before you can begin filling in your Induction Profile, a notification must be submitted. If you are in a school post, your school will submit the Induction Notification Form. If you are doing short-term supply, you will need to complete the Short-Term Supply Notification Form yourself.

Once this has been processed by the EWC, your online profile will be activated and you will receive a confirmation email. For supply teachers, it is important to log your first session quickly, as the system will not generate your profile until this step is complete.

Step 4: Logging induction sessions

A full induction consists of 380 sessions, which is typically equivalent to a full academic year of full-time work. Each half-day of teaching counts as one session. These sessions must be logged via your PLP and verified by the school you taught in using a Record of Attendance Form.

This applies to both long-term and supply placements. For supply teachers in particular, keeping on top of session logging and having forms signed promptly is crucial to avoid missing out on credit.

Step 5: Working with your mentor and verifier

Throughout your induction, you will be supported by an Induction Mentor who provides regular feedback, helps set targets, and checks progress against the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership.

If you are working across multiple schools or in a supply setting, you may also be assigned an external Verifier. Keep communication open and schedule regular reviews to ensure you are on track. Your mentor will also help validate entries in your PLP and offer guidance on building evidence effectively.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Teaching before registering with the EWC is a common mistake. Any sessions taught before you are officially registered will not count towards your induction hours, which can set you back significantly.
  • If you're completing induction through supply, it's essential to maintain regular contact with your consultant or career coach. They can support you throughout the process and are often able to sign off your induction sessions. Losing touch may lead to missed opportunities, delays in logging sessions, or incomplete records that can hold back your progress.
  • Some NQTs mistakenly register under the wrong professional category. This may delay the activation of your induction profile and create unnecessary admin when it needs to be corrected. Always double-check you have selected the "School Teacher" category.
  • Missing or submitting the incorrect notification form can prevent your profile from being set up on time. If you are working in a school, ensure the school submits the form. If you are on supply, it is your responsibility to submit the Short-Term Supply Notification Form.
  • Failing to log sessions frequently is a common issue, especially for supply teachers. Delaying entries or forgetting to have attendance verified by schools can make it harder to track and validate your progress later in the year.
  • Some NQTs forget to regularly update their PLP or overlook key tasks such as uploading evidence or reflections. Falling behind on these updates can lead to last-minute stress and weaken the quality of your final portfolio.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Who can sign off my induction sessions?

A senior staff member or mentor at the school where the session took place must sign off the Record of Attendance. This is then submitted through your PLP.

Do I need to find my own mentor?

In most cases, schools will assign a mentor. If you are on supply, the local authority will appoint an external verifier. At TeacherActive, we also offer additional coaching support through our career coaches.

What is the Professional Learning Passport (PLP) and how do I use it?

The PLP is your digital portfolio for tracking your induction. You log your teaching sessions, upload CPD evidence, and complete your induction profile here. It is accessed through your MyEWC account once you’re registered.

How do I register with the Education Workforce Council (EWC)?

You can register online via the EWC website. You’ll need your Teacher Reference Number (TRN), an up-to-date DBS check, and to select the correct registration category (School Teacher). There is an annual fee of £45.
