What Does a Food Technology Teacher Do?

A Food Technology Teacher (also known as a Food Preparation and Nutrition Teacher) delivers practical and theory-based lessons that equip students with essential life skills, including cooking, nutrition, and food safety.

In this role, you will teach students how to:

  • Prepare and cook a variety of dishes safely and hygienically
  • Understand nutrition, healthy eating, and balanced diets
  • Develop practical kitchen skills and confidence
  • Plan meals and understand food sourcing and sustainability
  • Apply knowledge of food science and dietary needs

You will inspire students to develop a lifelong understanding of food, health, and wellbeing, while preparing them for GCSE Food Technology / Catering qualifications (Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4).

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging Food Technology and Catering lessons to secondary school students
  • Teach practical cooking skills alongside food theory and nutrition topics
  • Plan and prepare interactive, hands-on lessons in line with the curriculum
  • Ensure a safe and hygienic learning environment in the kitchen/classroom
  • Assess, monitor, and track student progress
  • Prepare students for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition exams (KS4)
  • Maintain strong classroom behaviour management
  • Support students of varying abilities through differentiated teaching

Requirements

The successful Food Technology Teacher will have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – subject specialism not essential
  • Experience teaching Food Technology, Catering, or Hospitality up to Key Stage 4 (KS4)
  • Confidence delivering both practical and theory-based lessons
  • Strong classroom management and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A passion for food education, nutrition, and student development
