What Does an ALN Teacher Do?
An ALN Teacher (Additional Learning Needs Teacher) supports students who require additional help accessing education due to learning difficulties, disabilities, or behavioural challenges.
In this role, you will:
- Deliver tailored and differentiated lessons to meet individual learning needs
- Support students with conditions such as autism (ASD), ADHD, dyslexia, and SEMH (social, emotional and mental health needs)
- Adapt teaching strategies to support engagement and progress
- Work closely with Teaching Assistants, SENCOs, and external professionals
- Create and implement Individual Development Plans (IDPs) in line with the ALN framework in Wales
You will play a key role in creating an inclusive, structured, and supportive learning environment, ensuring every student can thrive both academically and personally.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver high-quality, differentiated lessons for ALN students
- Provide 1:1 support and small group interventions
- Develop, implement, and review Individual Development Plans (IDPs)
- Monitor and assess student progress, adapting strategies where needed
- Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing
- Work collaboratively with school staff, parents, and external agencies
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment
- Uphold safeguarding policies and procedures
Requirements
The successful ALN Teacher will have:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Experience working with ALN / SEN students in a school or specialist setting
- Understanding of the ALN Code for Wales (desirable)
- Knowledge of ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and other additional needs
- Strong classroom management and behaviour management skills
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
- A patient, empathetic, and adaptable teaching approach
