TeacherActive is currently recruiting for a caring, patient, and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to support a child in KS1 on a 1:1 basis at a welcoming and supportive primary school in Bordesley Green, Birmingham.

This rewarding role is perfect for someone passionate about supporting children with additional needs and helping them thrive both academically and socially within a mainstream school environment.

The position is full-time and will initially run from September 2026 until July 2027 to cover maternity leave, with the potential for extension depending on school requirements.

The Role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide tailored 1:1 support for a child with autism within a KS1 classroom
  • Help the pupil access learning activities and engage positively throughout the school day
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to deliver personalised support strategies and individual education plans (IEPs)
  • Support communication, emotional regulation, and social development using appropriate SEN strategies
  • Assist with daily routines and transitions to create consistency and reassurance
  • Build a strong, positive relationship with the child and their family
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback to teaching staff and SEN professionals

✅ What We’re Looking For

We’d love to hear from candidates who:

  • Have previous experience supporting children with autism or additional needs, ideally within a primary school setting
  • Demonstrate patience, empathy, and a nurturing approach
  • Are adaptable, proactive, and confident working on a 1:1 basis
  • Hold a relevant qualification such as Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant (or equivalent)
  • Communicate effectively with staff, parents, and external professionals
  • Are committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of children
