1:1 Home Tutor – Pre-Verbal Learners
Leicester | Flexible Hours | £30–£35 per hour
Are you an experienced SEN Tutor, Teacher or Teaching Assistant who is confident supporting pre-verbal or non-speaking young people?
TeacherActive is looking for patient, creative and adaptable tutors to provide 1:1 home tuition for secondary-aged pupils with complex communication and learning needs.
Although the learners are secondary age, they may be working well below age-related expectations, so the successful tutor will need to adapt learning to each pupil’s developmental level rather than simply following age-based curriculum expectations.
The role may include:
- Delivering personalised 1:1 tuition in the learner’s home
- Supporting pre-verbal or non-speaking pupils
- Adapting activities to individual developmental levels
- Using visual, sensory and practical learning approaches
- Supporting communication through symbols, visuals or Makaton
- Breaking learning into short, manageable activities
- Building trust, routine and consistency
- Supporting engagement, emotional regulation and confidence
- Working closely with families and other professionals
We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience supporting pupils with complex SEND
- Is confident working with pre-verbal learners
- Understands autism and significant communication needs
- Can adapt learning for pupils working below age-related expectations
- Is patient, calm and able to build relationships gradually
- Has experience with sensory learning or communication systems
- Can work independently while maintaining strong professional boundaries
- Has experience in SEND schools, EOTAS, alternative provision or 1:1 tuition desirable
