Pastoral Support / Learning Mentor

TeacherActive is proud to be working with a welcoming and inclusive Primary School that is looking to appoint a committed Pastoral Support / Learning Mentor to join its supportive team.

The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who may require additional pastoral, emotional or behavioural support, helping them overcome barriers to learning and develop the confidence, resilience and skills needed to engage positively with school life.

This is a full-time position requiring availability five days per week, and previous experience working as a Pastoral Support Worker, Learning Mentor, Behaviour Mentor or in a similar school-based role would be highly desirable.

Candidate Requirements

The ideal Pastoral Support / Learning Mentor will:

• Hold a Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification or above, or a Level 2 Childcare qualification or above.

• Have previous experience working with children within a primary school or educational setting.

• Ideally have previous experience as a Pastoral Support Worker, Learning Mentor, Behaviour Mentor or similar.

• Be available to work five days per week.

• Have a strong understanding of safeguarding and promoting children's welfare.

• Be confident supporting pupils experiencing social, emotional or behavioural difficulties.

• Have excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

• Demonstrate patience, empathy, resilience and a calm approach.

• Be able to establish clear and appropriate professional boundaries.

• Work effectively as part of a wider school team.

• Have a positive attitude and a genuine commitment to helping children succeed.

Key Responsibilities

As a Pastoral Support / Learning Mentor, your responsibilities may include:

• Providing individual and small-group pastoral support to pupils who require additional guidance.

• Building positive, trusting and professional relationships with pupils.

• Supporting children with their emotional wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem.

• Helping pupils develop strategies for managing emotions and regulating their behaviour.

• Identifying barriers to learning and supporting pupils to overcome them.

• Supporting pupils with attendance, engagement, behaviour and positive participation in school life.

• Delivering targeted mentoring or intervention sessions where required.

• Providing a safe and appropriate space for pupils to discuss concerns.

• Supporting pupils during periods of heightened emotion or challenging behaviour.

• Encouraging positive choices, resilience, independence and appropriate social skills.

• Working alongside teachers, the SENCO, pastoral leaders and senior leadership to provide consistent support.

• Contributing to individual support plans, behaviour plans and relevant pupil targets where appropriate.

• Monitoring pupil progress and maintaining appropriate records of pastoral interventions.

• Communicating relevant information with colleagues while maintaining professional confidentiality.

• Supporting positive relationships between pupils, staff and families where appropriate.

• Recognising safeguarding concerns and reporting these immediately in accordance with school procedures.

• Promoting the school's inclusive ethos and ensuring pupils feel respected, supported and valued.

Safeguarding & Compliance Requirements

• Hold an Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service, or be willing to obtain a new Enhanced DBS through TeacherActive.

• Complete TeacherActive's registration and safeguarding compliance requirements before commencing a placement.
