Location: Colchester, Essex
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience and qualifications
Hours: Full-Time, Term Time Only
Age Range: 13–17 years

Are you a passionate and resilient Teacher looking for a rewarding opportunity where you can make a genuine difference to young people's lives? Do you have the patience, creativity and confidence to engage pupils who may have faced barriers to education? If so, we'd love to hear from you.

TeacherActive is working with a welcoming and supportive SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Colchester that is looking to recruit a Teacher to work with young people aged 13–17.

The school supports pupils with a range of social, emotional and mental health needs who may find a mainstream school environment challenging. This is a fantastic opportunity for a Teacher who wants to provide young people with the structure, encouragement and positive relationships they need to re-engage with education and reach their potential.

About the Role

As an SEMH Teacher, you will plan and deliver engaging, accessible and differentiated lessons to pupils aged 13–17. You'll work closely with Learning Support Assistants and other professionals to provide a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment.

Building strong and trusting relationships will be a key part of the role. You'll need to understand that behaviour can be a form of communication and use a calm, consistent and positive approach to help pupils manage their emotions, develop confidence and engage successfully with their education.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging and differentiated lessons.
  • Teach and support young people aged 13–17 with SEMH needs.
  • Adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs and abilities.
  • Build positive, consistent and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Support pupils who may display challenging behaviour or struggle to engage with education.
  • Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation and resilience.
  • Create a safe, structured and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Monitor, assess and record pupil progress.
  • Support pupils' academic, social and emotional development.
  • Work closely with Learning Support Assistants and other professionals.
  • Contribute to individual education plans and pupil targets where required.
  • Maintain high standards of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.

What We're Looking For

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a relevant teaching qualification.
  • A patient, resilient and compassionate approach.
  • Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
  • The ability to remain calm and consistent in challenging situations.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to adapt lessons to meet a range of individual needs.
  • A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
  • Reliability, flexibility and a positive attitude.
  • Previous experience within SEMH, SEND, alternative provision or specialist education would be beneficial but is not essential.

In Return, You Can Expect

  • A welcoming and supportive specialist school environment.
  • Ongoing professional development and support.
  • The opportunity to develop valuable SEMH and SEND experience.
  • Competitive rates of pay.
  • Support from experienced education professionals.
  • A varied role where no two days are the same.
  • The opportunity to make a lasting difference to young people who need additional support to succeed.

Our staff are paid on a PAYE basis, so you can rest assured that you're paying the right level of Tax and National Insurance, with no hidden admin charges coming out of your hard-earned pay.
