TeacherActive is currently recruiting for a SEND Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist school in Witham, Essex.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The school provides a highly structured, supportive and nurturing environment for pupils who require additional help with their learning, communication, emotional regulation, independence and personal development.

The successful Learning Support Assistant will work closely with class teachers, SEND professionals and other support staff to ensure pupils can access their education in a safe, positive and inclusive environment.

Key Responsibilities

As a Learning Support Assistant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with a range of additional needs

  • Supporting pupils throughout lessons and helping them engage with classroom activities

  • Adapting tasks and resources to suit individual pupils' abilities and learning needs

  • Supporting pupils with communication difficulties, including those who may be non-verbal or use alternative communication methods

  • Helping pupils develop their social, emotional and communication skills

  • Supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour using calm, consistent and positive behaviour-management strategies

  • Helping pupils regulate their emotions and providing reassurance during periods of distress or dysregulation

  • Following individual EHCPs, behaviour plans, risk assessments and support plans

  • Encouraging pupils to develop greater independence and confidence

  • Supporting pupils during transitions between lessons, activities and different areas of the school

  • Providing additional support during break times, lunch times and other less structured parts of the school day

  • Helping to maintain a calm, structured and nurturing learning environment

  • Monitoring pupils' engagement, development and progress and feeding relevant information back to teaching staff

  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries

  • Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, pastoral staff and other professionals

  • Supporting pupils with sensory activities and interventions

  • Assisting with classroom preparation, resources and learning activities

  • Following all safeguarding, health and safety and SEND procedures

  • Providing personal care support where required, depending on pupils' individual needs

  • Supporting pupils with mobility, physical needs or medical routines where appropriate and once fully trained

  • Encouraging pupils to take part in lessons, enrichment activities and the wider school community

  • Calm and consistent when supporting challenging behaviour

  • Able to work effectively as part of a wider SEND team

  • Reliable, adaptable and willing to follow individual support plans

  • Passionate about helping pupils make academic, social and personal progress

  • Able to build strong professional relationships with pupils and staff

  • Comfortable supporting with personal care where required

Previous experience within a SEND school, mainstream school, care setting, residential setting, healthcare environment or youth work would be beneficial, although candidates with transferable experience will also be considered.

Working Hours

This is a full-time position working five days per week:

3 days per week: 8:30am – 3:15pm
2 days per week: 8:30am – 4:00pm

Daily Pay Rate: £106.76
