TeacherActive is currently seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, starting ASAP.

The school provides a supportive and nurturing environment for children and young people with a range of special educational needs. The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with teachers and the wider SEN team to help pupils access learning, develop their independence and make positive academic, social and emotional progress.

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will provide 1:1 and small-group support, adapting activities and your communication style to meet individual pupils’ needs. You will help pupils remain engaged with their learning while providing consistent encouragement and reassurance throughout the school day.

You may also support pupils with emotional regulation, communication, sensory needs and behaviour, using positive and appropriate strategies to create a safe and structured learning environment.

The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will have:

• Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEN
• Experience with Autism/ASC, SEMH or additional learning needs
• Confidence providing 1:1 and small-group support
• A calm, patient and nurturing approach
• Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
• The ability to adapt support according to individual needs
• The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• A reliable, resilient and adaptable approach
• A strong understanding of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
• An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one
• The right to work in the UK

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide 1:1 and small-group SEN support
• Support pupils with Autism/ASC, SEMH and additional needs
• Assist pupils with classroom activities and individual learning programmes
• Adapt resources and activities to meet individual needs
• Encourage communication, engagement and independence
• Support emotional and sensory regulation
• Promote positive behaviour using appropriate strategies
• Help pupils develop confidence, social skills and independence
• Build positive relationships with pupils
• Work closely with teachers, SEN staff and other professionals
• Monitor and support pupils’ engagement and progress
• Maintain a safe, structured and supportive learning environment
• Follow safeguarding procedures and prioritise pupil wellbeing

Please note:

• This is a full-time, long-term SEN Teaching Assistant position
• The role is based in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey
• There may be an opportunity for the position to become permanent
• Previous SEN, school, care or youth-work experience is highly desirable
• Sponsorship is not available for this position
