TeacherActive is proud to be working with a specialist SEND school based in Billericay, Essex, supporting boys aged 10–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
The school provides a structured, nurturing and therapeutic learning environment for pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Many pupils require additional support with emotional regulation, behaviour management, social communication and engagement in education.
We are currently seeking a dedicated and passionate SEND Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join the school's supportive team. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and other professionals to help pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop independence and achieve their full potential.
The Role
As a SEND Learning Support Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs and additional learning difficulties.
- Supporting young people aged 10–16 with their academic, emotional and social development.
- Managing challenging behaviour using positive behaviour management strategies and appropriate de-escalation techniques.
- Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma, attachment difficulties or disrupted education.
- Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, helping them develop coping strategies and positive behaviours.
- Assisting teachers with delivering engaging and differentiated lessons tailored to individual EHCP targets.
- Encouraging pupils to develop confidence, independence, resilience and positive social skills.
- Working collaboratively with teaching staff and pastoral teams to maintain a safe, structured and inclusive learning environment.
- Supporting pupils during classroom activities, transitions, breaktimes and other aspects of the school day.
- Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare and wellbeing of all pupils.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Previous experience working with children or young people with SEND, particularly SEMH, ADHD, autism or behavioural difficulties.
- Strong behaviour management skills and confidence supporting pupils who display challenging behaviour.
- A calm, patient and resilient approach when responding to difficult situations.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with young people.
- An understanding of trauma-informed approaches, emotional regulation and de-escalation strategies.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people and helping them achieve positive outcomes.
- Experience in specialist SEND schools, alternative provisions, residential care, youth work or similar settings would be highly desirable.
